A drain can look perfectly normal from the surface while a cracked section beneath the lawn, driveway or floor slab is allowing soil in and wastewater out. A CCTV drain survey is one of the most effective ways to identify visible cracking and other internal defects without starting with excavation.

The key word is visible. A camera provides direct evidence of the inside of a pipe, but it cannot see through standing water, heavy debris, dense roots or a completely collapsed section. It also cannot always confirm how far a crack extends beyond the pipe wall. A professional survey combines clear camera footage with pipe location, measured distances and practical interpretation of what the footage means for the site.

Can CCTV find pipe cracks accurately?

CCTV can identify many cracks where the camera has a clear view and can travel through the line. A specialised drain camera is fed into the pipe from an access point, such as a gully trap, inspection opening or manhole. The operator watches the live image and records the condition, direction and distance of defects along the run.

Cracks may appear as a fine line in the pipe wall, an open joint, a displaced section, a break with exposed soil, or an area where roots have entered. If a pipe is full of water, covered in grease, obstructed by debris or blocked by roots, the view may be partial or unavailable. Cleaning or clearing the line first may be required before its condition can be properly assessed.

Hairline cracks can be difficult to confirm. A narrow surface crack may be hidden by moisture, sediment or scale, especially in older pipework. Conversely, a visible line is not automatically a through-wall fracture. Camera angle, light reflection and pipe texture can create uncertainty. An experienced operator will record what is seen without overstating the result.

The camera cannot measure the full external extent of ground movement around a pipe. If the footage shows an offset joint, fractured pipe or loss of material, further investigation may be needed to understand whether there is a void, whether the line has dropped, or whether nearby construction has affected it. In some cases, targeted excavation is the only way to confirm the condition and complete a repair.

Access is another practical constraint. A camera needs a suitable entry point and enough pipe diameter to travel through. Tight bends, severe deformation, collapsed sections and unrecorded branch connections can stop progress. That does not make the inspection unsuccessful. The point where the camera stops is itself valuable evidence, particularly when it is accurately located from the surface.

Why locating the defect matters as much as finding it

Finding a crack is only the first part of the job. A report that says a drain is damaged but does not show where the damage sits can leave a property owner facing unnecessary exploratory digging.

During a properly planned CCTV survey, the drainage line can be traced and the defect position marked or mapped in relation to the site. This allows repairs to be targeted and helps avoid disruption to driveways, gardens, paving and building foundations. When a crack needs action

Pipe relining can be an option for some continuous runs where the pipe is structurally suitable and the line can be prepared. Full replacement may be necessary where there are multiple failures, substantial misalignment, inadequate falls or deteriorated pipe material throughout the run. The repair choice should follow the evidence, not precede it.

Getting useful results from a CCTV drain survey

The best time for an inspection is before small warning signs become major disruption. Repeated slow drainage, recurring blockages, unexplained damp ground, sinkholes, root problems or a planned renovation are all sensible triggers. So are property purchases and development work where existing drainage information is incomplete.

For the clearest outcome, provide any available drainage plans and identify known access points before the visit. If the line has recently backed up or been cleared, mention it. This gives the operator useful context and helps distinguish a one-off blockage from a defect that is likely to return.
